Welcome to Smile Sydney and Dr Alexander McEwen’s dental practice where we are dedicated to keeping Sydney smiling.
Dr. McEwen has a unique dental pedigree as his father and grandfather were both graduates from the University of Sydney and both practiced dentistry in Bathurst NSW. Dr. McEwen became the principal dentist of Smile Sydney in 1998, when he took over a retiring dentist’s practice in Kirribilli. Since that time the practice has evolved and relocated to North Sydney in early 2012 in a new world class dental facility.
Dr. McEwen is proud to be independent of corporate and health fund management. Practice philosophy is geared towards a wholistic approach in consultation with you the patient to give the best treatment outcome. Dr. McEwen special interests include Oral Pathology, Periodontology, CEREC and finally Dental Implants which he has been involved in over 1000 implant cases.

Dr. McEwen graduated with a bachelor of dental surgery (BDS) from University of Sydney in 1992 over 5 years full time and then went on to complete a masters degree in Oral Pathology (MSc. Dent) part time over 5 years also from University of Sydney in 2001. Later in 2005 Alex became a fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Dental Surgeons (RACDS) after completing the final college examinations (less than 10% of dentist are awarded this qualification). Dr. McEwen has also completed the Graduate Diploma in Clinical Dentistry (Oral Implants) from the University of Sydney in 2007, graduating at the top of his class.
Dr. McEwen has been active in the dental community being a member of the Australian Dental Association (ADA). Dr. McEwen has had memberships with the Australasian Osseointegration Society (AOS) and also the Australian Society of Periodontology (ASP) where he was the secretary and ultimately president for a period of 4 years from 2011 to 2014. Past appointments also include being a Lecture and Examiner at the University of Sydney for the graduate diploma in oral implants.
Alexis McEwen
Practice Manager
Alexis is the practice manager and plays a large par in the smooth operation of Smile Sydney since the beginning of this independent dental practice in 1998.
Alexis is also a fully qualified dental chairside assistant and can sometimes be seen helping Dr. McEwen in the dental surgery. She also is involved in behind the scenes sterilisation and cleaning of instruments.
Eda Sun
Chairside Assistant
Eda is Dr. McEwen’s trusted assistant who has been an invaluable help since 2008. Eda has full knowledge of all dental procedures and was carefully trained by Dr. McEwen. Eda is meticulous in sterilising the dental instruments and recording all batch tracking data in our daily log sheets.
